the brick lamp is inspired by the brick work of Louis Kahn and the ancient brick-lined water well. three-tiered, round brick structure made of 1:12 miniature bricks, sanded to specification and mortared together one by one.
physical sketches of the lamp began on the back of a gas station receipt. most of the ideation occurred in Rhino – an exploration of the modular brick unit – pushing the scale, pattern, and texture of brick-formed structures.
dimension guides helped improve the precision of brick sanding
bricks were assembled into position with blueprints. outlines were marked, then each brick was sanded to the proper angle. then bricks were put back into place.
mortar in these small quantities is very brittle and requires a delicate touch. the interior is finished with MFD, fiberglass, and resin for added strength and stability.
